J. Mark Slack has spent decades preparing to be an entrepreneur. With more than 20 years experience financing investment properties around the U.S., Mark set out on his own in 2009 to form Kanawha Realty Advisors. Backed by commercial real estate experience and solid relationships that have lasted throughout his career, Mark has worked with some of the biggest names in institutional real estate including SunAmerica Affordable Housing Partners, GMAC Commercial Mortgage, and Dynex Capital. He has originated, underwritten, serviced, and managed billions in capital for the finance and development apartment communities across the U.S.

A note on our name

“Kanawha” is a Native American word that has a multitude of meanings for our company. It’s a reference to where Mark was raised, in Kanawha County, West Virginia. The name traces back deep in the history of his alma mater, Washington & Lee, with a grant of Kanawha Canal stock from George Washington. The historic Kanawha Canal flows through his hometown of Richmond, Virginia. The term Kanawha has been a constant presence throughout Mark’s life. And it is our hope that Kanawha will be there for you as you look to develop homes and communities for your clients.
